Urinalysis Test

Urinalysis is a test performed as part of a routine health examination. Glucose is one of the substances that can be tested during a chemical analysis of urine. Glucose normally should not be detectable in your urine. A small increase in glucose is not necessarily abnormal, and could occur after a carbohydrate-rich meal, during pregnancy, or because of excessive stress. However, in the majority of cases, abnormally high glucose means you may have diabetes. Your doctor will likely want you to take additional tests if the results are positive.

If your glucose level is very high, the ability of your kidneys to reabsorb glucose is exceeded, and the excess amount spills over into your urine. This level of blood sugar is called the renal threshold, and is usually between 160 and 180 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Besides diabetes, a urine test can also be used to evaluate a number of symptoms, such as discolored urine, painful urination, abdominal pain, and fever. This test can be used to screen for and monitor diseases and conditions, such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and liver disease.
